An example of high performance Printed Circuit Board (PCB) DESIGN
As a results of its Application System Integrated Circuit (ASIC) and Multi-Chip Module (MCM) design and consultation, IPI is proficient in the design of high performance printed circuit boards (PCBs), i.e. complex, high frequency boards that require good transmission lines and power supply reticulation. Since this quite often is accompanied by severe power dissipation problems, it requires integral heat sinks.

Our technology of choice for high performance boards is the so-called "Multiwire" technology:
  • Multi-wire technology entails wires that are stitched by machine from pin to pin on a PCB, similar to wirewrap technology.
  • Similar to wirewrap there is no need for vias to change to a different routing plane in order to cross wires.
  • Crosstalk is minimised by routing nets almost point to point, thereby eliminating parallel routes.

Multiwire Advantages:
  • Unlike wirewrap, the wires are embedded in the PCB substrate, at a well controlled distance from the ground plane.
  • The good control of the dielectric thickness, wire thickness, height above ground plane and lack of vias, result in well characterised transmission lines.
  • Multiwire technology compares favourable in almost all respects to traditional multilayer technology.
  • Multiwire typically requires less than half the number of routing planes of the equivalent complex multilayer board.
  • The non-recurring engineering cost is also lower, because there is less tooling and artwork.
  • The design cycle can be reduced, because a multiwire board is typically much easier to route.
  • Multiwire technology is also compatible with standard multilayer technology, flex substrates and integral heatsinks, i.e. a single board can contain all these different technologies.
